Course Description
Identifying risk indicators and possible need for collaborative treatment of children with Airway and Sleep disorders is complex. Habitual Mouth Breathing, Sleep Disordered Breathing (as possible contributing factors to behavioral and learning problems) require an interdisciplinary approach. This program will familiarize participants with the pathophysiology and sequelae of habitual mouth-breathing and/or other Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) traits in children, the role of each Health Care Practitioner (HCP) stakeholder in the collaborative care of these children, and how collaboration with one another can efficiently lead to optimal treatment outcomes.
Course Objectives
Attendees will learn how to identify pediatric patients who might have:
- Specific Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) and referral for verification and possible need for Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT)
- Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs) and referral for verification and possible need for surgical release intervention
- Dental-Skeletal malocclusion traits and referral for verification and possible need for orthodontic/dentofacial orthopedic treatment intervention at the earliest feasible age
- Obstructive Adeno-Tonsillar Hypertrophy (ATH) and/or allergies (environmental, food), other respiratory issues and referral for verification and possible need for medication and/or surgical intervention
- Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBDs) and collaborative (with PCP) referral for verification and possible need for overnight Polysomnography (PSG) with a Sleep Medicine Physician
