Course Description
This course is designed for dental providers and will offer critically appraised, evidence-based information to help them effectively diagnose periodontal disease. The course will provide a chronological overview of the assessment phase of care, including steps for identifying, diagnosing, communicating, treating, and stabilizing periodontitis through non-surgical periodontal therapy. In addition, instrument kits will be available for attendees to review different instrument designs and learn how to set up efficient recall and SRP kits for clinical practice.
The second half of the seminar will introduce the fundamentals of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) and its role in airway-centered, physiologic care. Attendees will explore how myofunctional dysfunction impacts oral and systemic health and understand when to integrate or refer for therapy.
Course Objectives
- Describe the components of a comprehensive periodontal assessment phase.
- Apply the 2017 AAP/EFP classification system to stage and grade periodontitis.
- Differentiate between periodontal and peri-implant disease classifications.
- Develop evidence-based treatment plans for patients with periodontal and implant conditions.
- Identify appropriate adjunctive therapies to enhance non-surgical periodontal therapy outcomes.
- Utilize a clinical decision-making framework for periodontal diagnosis and treatment sequencing.
- Identify efficient instrument setups for scaling and root planing and basic recall kits.
- Define orofacial myofunctional therapy and its role in airway-centered care.
- Identify normal versus dysfunctional orofacial structures and functional patterns.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders across the lifespan.
- Explain the relationship between myofunctional disorders and systemic conditions such as sleep-disordered breathing and TMD.
- Describe foundational assessment methods used in myofunctional therapy.
- Discuss the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in managing airway and myofunctional cases.
- Outline strategies for integrating myofunctional therapy principles into clinical practice or referral pathways.
