Course Description
Obstructive sleep apnea is common, serious, and largely undiagnosed, and dental professionals are well positioned to recognize patients at risk. This 2-hour webinar introduces the fundamentals of dental sleep medicine. It defines the spectrum of sleep-disordered breathing, from snoring to obstructive sleep apnea, and reviews key sleep study terms such as AHI. Participants will learn practical in-office screening, including validated questionnaires and oral and craniofacial findings, and the major medical comorbidities associated with OSA. The course also clarifies the dentist’s scope of practice and offers strategies for communicating and collaborating with sleep physicians to support appropriate diagnosis and care.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, and explain key sleep study terms such as AHI and oxygen desaturation.
- Use validated screening tools, such as STOP-BANG and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and recognize oral and craniofacial findings associated with airway risk.
- Identify the major medical comorbidities associated with OSA, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke.
- Describe the dentist’s scope of practice in dental sleep medicine, including the physician’s role in diagnosis.
- Apply effective strategies for referring patients to sleep physicians and communicating with them.
