Course Description
Explore how early jaw and facial development may influence breathing, sleep quality, and overall health in toddlers and preschoolers. This course examines early childhood skeletal malocclusion, its relationship with sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea, and the evidence informing developmental dentofacial orthopedic intervention.
Course Objectives
- Optimizing structure and function of the still growing/developing craniofacial respiratory complex (CFRC)
- Maximizing a child’s lifespan and health-span potential
- Minimizing oxidative stress from intermittent hypoxia in children afflicted with hypoplastic skeletal malocclusion phenotypes and SDB/OSA co-morbidity
- Describing and defining Early Childhood Skeletal Malocclusion (ECSM) as a reliably persisting (i.e., seldom, if ever, self-correcting) health affliction
