Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), guiding participants from foundational principles through clinical application and implementation. Designed for dental, medical, and allied health professionals, the course explores the anatomy, physiology, and functional patterns of the orofacial complex and their relationship to airway health, craniofacial development, temporomandibular disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, and overall systemic health.
Participants will gain an evidence-based understanding of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), including etiology, assessment, and their impact across the lifespan—from infancy through adulthood. The course emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of myofunctional therapy within physiologic, airway-centered care models.
Through a combination of didactic instruction, clinical examples, and practical frameworks, learners will develop the knowledge and confidence necessary to recognize myofunctional dysfunction, understand when and how to intervene, and begin implementing myofunctional therapy principles into clinical practice or referral pathways.
Course Objectives
- Define orofacial myofunctional therapy and describe its role within airway-focused, physiologic, and interdisciplinary healthcare models.
- Identify normal and abnormal orofacial structure and function, including tongue posture, swallowing patterns, breathing patterns, and oral rest posture.
- Explain the relationship between orofacial myofunctional disorders and systemic conditions, such as sleep-disordered breathing, TMJD, orthodontic instability, and craniofacial growth patterns.
- Recognize common signs and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders across different age groups, including infants, children, and adults.
- Understand foundational assessment principles used in myofunctional therapy, including clinical observation, screening tools, and interdisciplinary diagnostic considerations.
- Describe basic myofunctional therapy concepts and therapeutic goals, including neuromuscular re-education, habit elimination, and functional optimization.
- Discuss the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, including working alongside dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, sleep physicians, bodyworkers, and lactation consultants.
- Outline practical steps for implementing myofunctional therapy, including patient education, case selection, referral pathways, and integration into an existing clinical practice.
- Apply foundational knowledge to clinical scenarios, demonstrating appropriate decision-making regarding screening, referral, and initiation of therapy.
